Dave Sarin: A Truly Great Canadian

By Brian Madigan LL.B.

This is Canada Day 2009, Canada’s 142nd birthday. I thought that I might post a comment about Dave (Devinder) Sarin, a good friend and colleague of mine.

When I was thinking about my Canada day post, I thought about truly great Canadians, politicians, war heroes, athletes, inventors, and scholars. Then, it occurred to me: I know a truly great Canadian.

Dave was a young 27 year old Indian trained Engineer who moved to Canada with his young bride Sheshi in 1966. He enjoyed remarkable success and praised his new country Canada as the land of opportunity. According to Dave, it was the closest place to paradise, a theme he took from his Hindu religion and the references to Ram Raj.

In fact, Dave was so impressed with his new country that he wrote a book: “A Canadian’s Ram Raj”. His words are inspiring, and anyone who reads Dave’s work will understand the difficult challenges faced by young Canadians as they aspire to achieve success in a land of opportunity. Integration without losing one’s identity are healthy ingredients for a diverse and multi-cultural society. Dave’s book is really a “must-read” for all newcomers and those who would like to come to Canada. Actually, it a must-read for everyone who loves Canada.

So, this year, my Canada Day post is to celebrate my friendship with a truly great Canadian: Dave Sarin.
